How Does Dishonesty Affect Winning and the Willingness to Compete? Evidence from a Stiff Competition Environment
نویسندگان
چکیده
We experimentally investigate how the possibility of behaving dishonestly affects the willingness to compete and who the winner is when there is stiff competition. Our results show that although only some subjects are dishonest when competing, dishonest behaviour creates significant inefficiencies due to best performing subjects not winning. Willingness to compete, on the other hand, was unaffected. Key-words: Competition; dishonesty; experiment. JEL code: C91; D03; D04. a Corresponding author. Stress Reactions Cannot Explain the Gender Gap in Willingness to Compete
Women are often less willing than men to compete, even in tasks where there is no gender gap in performance. Also, many people experience competitive contexts as stressful and previous research has documented that men and women sometimes react differently to acute stressors. We use two laboratory experiments to investigate whether factors related to stress can help explain the gender gap in com...
متن کاملMatrilineal Kinship and Gender Differences in Competition*
I examine how kinship systems affect gender differences in willingness to compete among individuals from matrilineal and patrilineal societies in Central Africa. These individuals share a common urban environment today, and they are from nearby areas along the border of the matrilineal belt. Individuals participated in a lab experiment in which they completed a task under piece rate pay, tourna...
متن کاملHow to Design Crowdsourcing Contest: A Structural Empirical Analysis
In the past few years several firms have undertaken crowdsourcing initiatives to benefit from wisdom as well as labor of the consumer crowds. In particular, crowdsourcing contests where, individuals, typically unaffiliated with the firm, compete with each other to solve firms' problems to gain a monetary reward have become very popular. A key challenge faced by the firms that undertake crowdsou...
متن کاملA Supply Chain Network Economy: Modeling and Qualitative Analysis
This chapter proposes a modeling intitiative that is network-based to formalize both intrasupply chain cooperation and inter-supply chain competition. In particular, we propose a general network model for a supply chain economy since it is now recognized that when it comes to production, distribution, and consumption today, it is no longer simply firms that compete with one another, but, rather...
متن کاملHow does the Gender Difference in Willingness to Compete evolve with Experience?
I study how gender differences in willingness to compete evolve over time in response to experience. Participants in a lab experiment perform the same real-effort task over several rounds. In each round, they have to choose between piece-rate remuneration and a winner-takes-all competition. At the end of each round, those who compete get feedback on the competition outcome. The main result is t...
